Job description
Data Scientist - Nuclear (US Citizens Only)
$60,000 - $85,000 + Training + Great Benefits + 401k + 4 Weeks PTO
Knoxville, Tennessee (On Site)
Are you an early-career data scientist or ML engineer who wants to write Python that actually matters, where your code directly supports the safe operation of nuclear power plants, rather than optimising ad clicks or recommendation engines?
This is a rare opportunity to work in the nuclear power industry, where your analysis directly supports the safe, reliable operation of nuclear instrumentation and control systems used at power plants around the world.
You'll join a collaborative team of nuclear, electrical, and software engineers, learning a structured internal analysis workflow before taking real ownership of test areas. The work is hands-on from day one, writing and maintaining Python-based analysis code, supporting online monitoring programmes, and producing results that utility customers stake regulatory decisions on.
This role suits someone who is serious about applied data science in a high-consequence environment, wants to grow quickly under experienced mentorship, and takes pride in producing work that is accurate, documented, and defensible.
The Role
- Write and maintain Python-based analysis code to turn real plant measurement data into clear, documented engineering results
- Apply ML and AI techniques to sensor and system-level data to identify trends, anomalies, and degradation patterns
- Support online monitoring programmes and become proficient with internal analysis tooling
- Contribute to software verification, validation, and version control activities under strict Quality Assurance processes
- Collaborate with experienced engineers to improve and automate analysis workflows
- Participate in occasional travel to nuclear facilities to support field data collection and testing
The Person
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related technical field
- Demonstrated Python proficiency and hands-on experience with data science tools such as Jupyter notebooks and scientific libraries
- Genuine interest in applied engineering analysis, you want to understand how complex systems behave, not just process data
- Detail-oriented and disciplined, with a natural instinct for data integrity and reproducible results
- Comfortable operating within structured, regulated workflows and quality assurance frameworks
- Collaborative, curious, and committed to continuous improvement
- US citizenship required to meet federal compliance and nuclear facility access regulations
